Luxury box specially designed for Nexo corporate gifts
CUSTOM GIFT PACKAGING TURNS INTO AN EASEL DISPLAY FOR A SILVER TOKEN
A hand-crafted collectable token needs the suitable pedestal
For our partners from Oblik studio, we previously made the custom design for the Nexo Badges Box. After we completed its bespoke production, in 2022 we had an even more delightful task, to create a new design that would serve several purposes: a gift and transportation packaging and a display for a limited edition, handcrafted silver token with the Nexo insignia.
HOW THIS PROJECT BEGAN
“Once again, we had a request for a bespoke box to be designed for the custom-made Silver NEXO Token. As always your team was constructive and helpful and, together, we developed another box made by nPack that fully meets our needs.”
— Dimitar Protogerov, Co-founder of Oblik Studio
The specialness of the silver token prompted an outstanding packaging concept where natural materials take over the functions of plastic.
As a packaging designer and manufacturer with an environmentally oriented philosophy,
we embraced the idea to create all performing elements of the box mechanism from paper and solid board.
We worked on:
Exterior design
Custom elements
Step by step
Through a stage of Product Development, nPack’s Team completed a complex invention for the inner layout that combines different structural elements, all of them working together to perfection and meeting all functional requirements. Before production, we provided our client with a plain sample for design verification.
Under the lid
Following the Project Brief stage, during which we cleared the details of the box’s overall appearance, the stage of creation was focused on the interior elements. Our inventive design lies under the hinged lid, where a mobile insert holds an individual coin. The insert consists of a lifting platform and a tight-fitting bed for a clear hard plastic capsule.
With the help of a ribbon pull, the insert can slide to a standing position. There it remains in place thanks to an easel back tab.
A ribbon stop holds the lid in place to complete the display function of the box.
It all clicks into place
For the pre-production verification, we opted to go straight for real-life prototyping instead of showing the concept in 3D. The plain pre-production sample assured a working model for our client’s consideration, on which we based the following order run. All structural elements were made in the real production environment. For the tray, we used stock containers remaining from a previous order.
During this stage, our special attention was directed to the lifting of the platform and the exact size of the capsule’s bed.
The advantage of handcrafting
A series of manual operations make the assembly of the box display possible. There are no loose parts. In each box, the base panel of the token platform is glued to a foundation and then to the tray. All elements are firmly attached to each other, including the ribbons and secondary lining. All copies look and work exactly the same thanks to precise processing by skilled hands.
Where the packaging industry would use synthetic elements, we adapted our technology to create all components from paper and board.
Consistent with the bundle
Previous productions of boxes for Nexo follow a repeating pattern. The outer box colour is blue and the print is silver. With the Nexo token project, we were prompted by our client to keep the same basic colour schemе.
Two more of our projects with Oblik Studio feature custom elements and bespoke production.
BOX STYLE
Similar to the Badges Box, the winning concept was the book-style rigid box with magnets.
This time, coming up with the decision about the box model was not an obstacle at all.
We based the modern looks of the token box on the timeless appearance of the book style.
BOX SIZE
The square aspect ratio was an absolutely logical choice, with the capacity of the box itself carefully adjusted to the size of the coin capsule.
Fortunately for the tight time schedule, we had a ready cutter for the requested size.
PAPER CHOICE
In search of blue paper which corresponds with previous Nexo projects, our client chose Colorplan Sapphire with Morroco embossing. For the black-dyed paper, we trusted our stock again, namely Koehler Brilliant Black at 120 gsm & 350 gsm.
The artistic design of the silver print was created by Oblik Studio’s designers and shines wonderfully in contrast with the blue surface.
Exclusive unboxing experience
The effortless, elegant slide of the platform and the flawless functioning of the capsule’s bed are the results of meticulous precision in the calculations and perfection in the handcrafting process.
LIFTING PLATFORM
Once we open the box, a ribbon intuitively suggests that it should be used for action. The satin band is precisely placed and measured to perform its function to pull out the lifting platform.
The platform is a compound invention that we made entirely from paper and solid board.
This element has a folder-style construction and is suitable for repeated folding and unfolding. Its lower panel acts as a support and the platform stays up.
Its luxurious appearance is due to the solid board which is the black, dyed-through visible core of the platform’s panels. Furthermore, the 2 mm thickness makes the stand practically everlasting.
The knife-processed, particularly straight edges make it possible for the easel back foot to glide in place in a fluent fashion.
CAPSULE BED
The bed is designed to fix the plastic capsule when the platform stands. It also keeps the capsule in place during transportation and storage.
With this in mind, during the prototyping stage of the process, we tested 3 different capsule bed sizes before we chose the best fit.
The consistent black colour of the interior materials brings out the brilliance of the token.
We achieved consistency in the black colour by using the same black dyed 2 mm board which serves as a core for the platform.
A thumb hole on its upper right side makes it easier to take the capsule out.
RIBBON STOP
Between the board-lined lid and the box’s foundation stretches a delicate satin ribbon. It’s called a ribbon stop for its function to limit the movement of the hinged lid.
This element was the final touch that completed the display function of the box.
” This year too, everyone was very happy with the gift and its packaging and we received many positive comments from Nexo customers.
Again you have developed and completed an exclusive quality product that fully met our needs.”
